What’s the difference between plaque and tartar?

To many, the words plaque and tartar are often used interchangeable when people are talking about bacteria build up on their teeth. There are a few key differences between plaque and tartar that we want you to know.

Plaque is identified as the clear sticky residue that is continuously forming on your teeth throughout the day and night. Food particles, sugar, and saliva all mix together to form this residue that makes your teeth feel dirty and furry between brushings.

Plaque begins to develop on the teeth several hours after brushing (even if you have brilliant oral hygiene). This is why it’s important for everyone to brush and floss at least twice a day and always remember that regular interruption of the bacteria growth in your mouth is essential to maintain a healthy smile for a life.

When you don’t remove place regularly or efficiently, it hardens into a substance called tartar (or calculus). Tartar is old plaque that cannot easily be removed by normal brushing. Tartar needs to be removed by a dentist, as tartar build up gets harder to combat as it progresses.
