Dental Crowns
The crown is the part of the tooth that is visible above the gum line. Dental crowns are porcelain restorations that cover your tooth’s crown to restore its shape and size. Its purpose is to strengthen or improve the appearance of a tooth.
The most common reason a patient needs a dental crown is from either injury or excessive decay. After either a root canal or particularly large filling, our team may suggest a dental crown to protect and strengthen the tooth.
A second reason, which is becoming more popular, is having dental crowns placed for cosmetic reasons. If a tooth is stained beyond the help of tooth whitening, patients do occasionally opt for a dental crown. Dental crowns are made from porcelain so it can be colour matched to the shade and colour of your natural teeth.
Treatment for dental crowns
Getting a dental crown takes two appointments. The first appointment is when a mould of your teeth is taken and sent to the lab. There a porcelain, long-lasting crown will be fabricated. While your new crown is being created, your tooth will be prepared for the restoration and a temporary placed.
A week later you’ll return for your second appointment. During this appointment your temporary will be removed and your permanent restoration placed. However, by permanent we mean this crown is strong and durable: but it will only last (with good care) up to 10-15 years.
Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is a way to replace one or more missing teeth. Replacing missing teeth makes it easier to chew, can improve your appearance and it also helps to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
A dental bridge consists of two abutments (dental crowns) attached to a prosthetic tooth. The two teeth on either side of the gap are prepared and the dental crowns are attached. The process for dental bridges is similar to dental crowns with the exception that two teeth, not one, will be prepared for dental crowns.
